ZIERLER: As you got comfortable in the field, where did you see an opportunity to contribute? It was this weird, internal drive. MAGUIRE: Very rarely. This is a true story. I'm not talking about on a physics level. I had to say yes to it on the spot, so I went to DARPA for a year and a half full-time there. The hardware is going to be really valuable. SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches rockets and spacecraft. I would do these thought experiments. He dropped out of MIT. I have a fellowship, so I don't need any funding. With the literature, I am really, really busy. MAGUIRE: I'm actually not so sure about that. Another example is fiber-optic communication, where in the late 90s, early 2000s, there was an incredible amount of venture capital money and government subsidies that went into building fiber infrastructure. There was this incredible energy and camaraderie there, and it was addicting, especially for me coming fromI had only been exposed to solitary research before that.
